To stop child marriages, the Assam government on Thursday introduced a program that will give financial aid to female students each month. Nijut Moina Asoni (MMNMA) is expected to benefit approximately one million female students and cost the government Rs. 300 crore in the first year and approximately Rs. 1500 crore over five years.

The chief minister of Assam Mr Himanta Biswa recently announced that the scheme will work on a whopping budget of rupee 1,500 crores. The scheme will be a great initiative for the females of the state. The concept of child marriage will be eradicated from society by providing education to the females of the state. The scheme will also increase the literacy rate among the females of the state. This will also help them to live their lives independently, they don’t need any external help to overcome their financial conditions.

Objective of Assam Nijut Moina Scheme

The main motive behind launching the Assam Nijut Moina Scheme was to increase the involvement of girl child in education. The scheme will also work for the elimination of the evil concept of child marriage. Scheme will provide financial assistance to female students to complete their education without any financial burden. The scheme will also help in increasing the number of women who will be pursuing higher education. Under this scheme, around 10 lakh females will be provided with financial assistance to complete their education.

Features of Assam Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Scheme

Some of the key features of this scheme are mentioned below:

• The plan would raise the proportion of female students enrolled in colleges, universities, and schools.
• This year, an additional 200,000 female students are anticipated to enroll in educational institutions.
• The National Family Health Survey 2019–21 found that 31.8% of women in the 20–24 age group were mothers, meaning that the majority of these women had married before the legally permissible age of 18. Hence to combat from this issue this scheme will be helpful in to end the child marriages in the state.
• The students will complete application forms that will be sent to the specific colleges in where they are currently enrolled.
• The Registrars/Principals will gather and check the application forms via the relevant portal, submitting accurate information for the site’s automated verification. Applications do not need to be submitted starting in the second year.
• To be eligible for benefits, the student only needs to present a certificate from the institution’s head attesting to their continued enrolment.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for applying under this scheme is simple and are given below:-

• The candidates have to be state residents of Assam permanently.
• The candidate has to be a female citizen to avail of the benefits of this scheme.
• Applicant is not allowed to be a married citizen.
• The candidate must be enrolled in any Assamese school or institution to receive an education.

Scope of Applicability

• The financial assistance will be provided as an admission incentive to the students who are admitted to any government higher secondary, graduation, or post-graduation, excluding those who are enrolled in private institutions.
• The beneficiaries of this scheme are advised to maintain discipline and they have to respect all the rules and regulations which are being set by their respective institutes.
• If a student is caught in any kind of disruptive behavior like ragging, cheating, or vandalism, it will result in the withdrawal of the benefit from the scheme.

Amount of Financial Aid Provided

Under the Mukhya Mantri Nijut Moina Scheme started by the government of Assam state, the details of the financial assistance that will be provided to the girls of the state according to class are as follows.

Benefits of Assam Nijut Moina Scheme

The benefits of this scheme are mentioned below:

• An incentive of up to Rs 10,000 per year, or Rs 1000 per month for a maximum of ten months, would be given to each qualifying girl student enrolling in Class 11.
• An incentive of up to Rs. 1250/-per month for ten months, or a total of Rs. 12,500/-per year, will be given to each of the qualified female students enrolled in the first year of graduation.
• The initiative will also pay for female student’s education costs at universities and other educational establishments.
• To all qualifying female students enrolled in Post-Graduation First year, an incentive of Rs 2500 per month over a maximum of up to ten months would be paid, making a total of Rs 25,000 per year.
